hey can someone help me out with this? i feel like im losing form and i need someone to sort of guide me to make it clear where i need to put my lights and darks because i feel like im not doing this right. i'll include the sketch in a reply incase its needed. thanks.

Sinix's videos on digital painting is pretty good to get you into the concept of distillation which ultimately helps you show the form.

I'm still getting lost when color painting myself, but I do spend a lot of my time sketching so I've got a little knowledge in showing the surface of the form. Drawing helps a lot, but working without the lines is an interesting process in itself.

a) you don't want the eye "whites" to be that much lighter than the skin, they rarely are, same for the teeth, and b) I would study picrel and similar

use this everytime you need to light a head and you'll slowly internalise it

You're trying to block in the form with midtones. When you start coloring like this, put down the darkest values first so that you have the most dramatic plane changes established. Don't be afraid to push your darks and lights beyond what you're comfortable with, the beauty of digital is that you can pretty easily adjust them later if you feel like you're going overboard.
