This is why I charge by the hour, people pay more the longer I take to finish a commission, works wonders when taking 3 commissions at the same time

I estimate a rough amount of time and price accordingly as a starting point. if colouring takes 2 hours and lineart 1 a coloured piece should be roughly 3 times more expensive. If I fuck up and take 5 hours, well, that's on me.
Maybe my time isn't worth that much but at some point if I make less drawing than I would in a cage at the nearest amazon warehouse why bother

These two paintings took the same amount of time, ones worth $70 right now ones worth nothing. Quantity doesn’t beat quality, but make enough quantity eventually you’ll hit quality. Don’t worry about hourly wages, if I calculated my hourly rate it’d be like $500 an hour, but the hardest part about selling art is that things don’t sell right away, if everything I made immediately sold I’d be a billionaire, instead I make a pretty livable wage with a large inventory.

Being paid by the hour punishes efficiency and skill. It doesn't account for the amount of time and knowledge that it requires to have come to the point where the artist/designer is skilled enough to work that quickly and come out with a good product.

What size of painting typically sells the fastest for you? I've heard small plein air paintings move pretty quickly.

You're paying for the experience and skill of someone. If you prioritize speed or throughput of work, then you're either going to be making a sacrifice of quality or cost. At a point, when you hire an expert you're hiring them for their experience and not how long they'll take to do something.
