How hard is it to do the human xerox machine thing? I know everyone shits on it and I get why it sounds easy. Draw grid and copy monotonously. But I feel like this is one of those things where you’re like yeah I could totally do that but then it comes out completely ass in reality. Has anyone actually tried to do this successfully? is it actually as easy as it sounds? I’m just curious

Kinda. I tried it once, realized how braindead it is, and never did it again.

Yeah. Try it, and you will be surprised how good your first attempt looks. It still takes practice to get perfect, but the amount of practice is rather small. If you just do it, you basically guaranteed to get to perfect results within a year, probably faster.

pencil rednering is a very forgiving process that you can't really fail. just make sure to protect the paper from your hand and choose a ref you're prepared to look at for dozens of hours.

imagine doing 1:1 photocopies for your whole career. imagine the shamelessness you must possess to call yourself an artist among people who actually possess creativity.

even doing so little as making compositional collages from ref pics would be better than what they're doing. literally just copy from a basic high res photo almost always of a subject that is doing nothing. if the artist is a nig or faggot, preferably both, they'll be praised as a genius.

Fascinating. Personally, I never had an interest in copying or drawing directly from reference. Much more fun to construct things from imagination. I do use reference photos, but to see how things look and then draw them into my art, never to copy them verbatim.

huh interesting. I might just do one as a portfolio piece if it really is that simple. I’ve never tried to do it before. Apparently bigger is better for it so I’d probably try a3 but I didn’t want to dump hours into it to realise it’s actually much harder than I thought. I totally agree with others that it’s a complete absence of creativity but I’d try it once if I’ll get a good piece out of it

I was into it back in high school though I never really took it as far as your picture. I never drew on anything bigger than letter size white notebooks and never drew with so much detail, so take it with a grain of salt, but it wasn't all that difficult and would assume doing something like op isn't much harder either, you just need to be patient and have an eye for detail. But hey, maybe it does get substantially harder.

the point of doing this shit on a large piece of paper is that you can be sloppy as fuck and it will still look fine when you shrink it for a monitor or phone screen
there is a reason why all these "hyperreal" artists draw gigantic pictures

It's mostly stupid artist's trick kind of thing, but there are things you can learn from it, like controlling value, and how to use your medium to do that.
There's no real market value for it. Fun to try. For a real challenge, try and do it without a grid. You'll get some solid experience measuring.

But that’s the hardest thing about it other than having to dump hours in the double digits just to make one piece.

It’s pretty much the most soulless and creatively bankrupt type of art you could do, since most of these people are literally just copying photos other people shot, usually of characters other people have created, centimeter by centimeter.

People who don’t really know much about how drawings are impressed by this shit, because they don’t show the reference photo it doesn’t occur to them that they’re just reproducing other people’s work.

There are some photorealists who shoot their own photographs first but the money is in impressing normies by copying movie stills of the Joker

Drawing accurately from reference is significantly easier than making something up.
The simple reason being the task at hand.

This means you can spend a hundred years learning art and still only understand only a small portion of it. This is a sentiment shared by Hokusai.
A non realism vs photorealism example would be animating a guitar solo
>If you wanted to animate the guitar solo from reference all you would have to do is to match the hands shown in the reference to the animation
>If you wanted to animate the guitar solo from imagination, you'd have to be a good enough guitar player to know where the fingers will go and how and to draw it out.
Once again, its not easy, just simpler in comparison.

The fine physical control, observation ability, understanding of the medium and how to produce certain effects, and patience required are not trivial skills to muster. If you want to execute at the highest level, you're probably going to have to practice. Most novices will make something akin to pic related where there's almost a feeling of realism, but the values are off and the drawing is janky.
That's because most people don't understand how to draw and how to group values, nor really do they understand what they're even looking at, so they're prone to misinterpret what they see. Reflected light will be pushed too far flattening the image, midtones will be extended into the lights, muddying the whole thing. They may also just choose a shit reference photo with blown out lights and darks, because hyperrealists lack any taste.
Since even high-level hyperrealism is ultimately copying exactly what you see, you have to be very good at that one skill of copying, which does take practice. So they're good at one thing.

The reason why /ic/ puts it down is 1. cope/ego/need to feel superior and 2. it really is relatively easier than actually composing an original idea or interpreting a photo at a high level like say Stephen Bauman. In general fundamental skills are overrated in art. Learning anatomy is easy. The difficulty is having the imagination and tenacity to do something original and unseen.
