I’m assuming this is because IE fans did this en mass to make new portraits since those games had an extremely thriving scene, then they decided they want to work on cRPGs and carried the workflow over.
The reason it’s so striking compared to current bashing (I think) is that them being amateurs and the internet no being quite what it is today, they usually used literal supermodel and hollywood star pro photoshoots for female portraits, everything in NWN screams supermodel.
