>>5139878actually working on a larger scale visual novel myself (can't disclose what it is, came here to look for decent/cheap background artist, if anyone knows where to point me to that'd be great)
writing is pretty fun, a lot of challenges unique to visual novels. The writers all use a google doc with different colors to each person so we know who does what and tag off each other every so often, and we write in such a way that it can be copy/pasted into the game engine without many problems, making programming that much easier.
programming a visual novel is pretty babbys first game experience, and i'm told by our lead programmer that it's grueling and mindless, but he still greatly enjoys working on the project.
as for art, there's a number of things to consider. we have one guy making sketches of everything we need, and another turning the sketches into the final products. very important to have separate layers for absolutely everything since just changing a character's expression requires messing with other layers to a good extent as well. tl;dr most important thing in making a visual novel is having a team that is also passionate about getting it done, and communication. literally everything else comes second.
