Basically scientists put a bunch of mice in a controlled environment where they had all the food, water, and space they could need. Everything was fine at first until the Alphas started killing and shunning their offspring/hoarding all of the females to avoid any form of competition. The betas all were forced to live in the center of the box this was all taking place in, and couldn't enter any of the corner complexes. These beta rats would all huddle up together and every once in a while lash out at one another in fits of mad rage or start having gay sex with one another.
Since they could not reproduce, they began to die out... then came the next generation.
The rats being born by the alphas who weren't immediately killed by them ended up moving to the center of the box to take the place of the previously deceased betas. However, they did not have any violent desires or needs to reproduce. The only things they did all day was eat, shit, and groom themselves relentlessly. Hence they were dubbed "The Beutiful Ones".
Eventually, all of the old generation died out... And the beautiful ones just sat there, unwilling to reproduce with females, and the entire population died out.
This isn't an accurate depiction of humanity's overpopulation, but you can definitely see some similarities, right?
