The problem is most artists don't understand that an art piece's value comes from being niche, personal value, and objective use. The more niche it is (nsfw, fetishes, etc) the more value it has, and the more popular a character, the more of a reach you get for the art piece, b/c that character holds a lot of personal value to a lot of people. Nsfw also have the advantage in that their coomsumers are going to be using their art for 'leisure' activities.
Sfw artists immediately get put at a disadvantage b/c most fanarts they do simply isn't any different to what's out there and are often times derivatives of images/scenarios of the character just redone in their art style, and most of those art styles all have the same feel to them and look relatively the same. There's also the fact that most of these fanarts do very little outside of maybe being a phone background. You can easily get around these problems if you're smart about it and either develop an actually unique art style and/or utilize your art to make products. Make t-shirt designs, key-chains, spritework, etc. Your art should also show you can do more than just pinups/fanarts, otherwise you'll only attract people who are interested in pinups/fanarts, which tends to be the type who simply don't know/care about art/artists and only care about the game/movie/book, etc you're making fanart of.

eh, I don't like nsfw artists that much either, but a lot of them actually have substance in their art styles, compared to a lot of the sfw artists I see whose art styles all feel like they're trying to mimic manga/anime or the tumblr fandom. A few sfw with an actually good and unique art style do stand out but stick mostly to basic pinups or don't post often enough for me to really care. Instead of directly shitting on nsfw artists you should try to actually learn why they have it so easy. Most of it has to with the fact it's easy to establish a demographic with a demand, something most sfw struggle with b/c most communities aren't demanding shit minicomics or basic pinups of characters.

SFW art has a lot more competition, you're going up against actual professionals who have been drawing for years, if not decades. That's tough.

However, if you do NSFW art, it may take some time to build a fanbase and find a niche you don't mind drawing for, but when you find your audience and demand is high enough, you can command higher prices for your commissions, especially if you draw well. The only problem is that if you have professional ambitions then your NSFW could potentially be a problem if it's found, or if just one fan of yours gets disgruntled and tells people about your NSFW art.
