>>130209574It’s because Family Guy became reliant on cutaway gags and it showed that their characters aren’t strong enough to hold up in an actual story. The show is disingenuous unlike South Park and Simpsons, it really adds nothing to culture but quotes.
South Park had a concept whether or not it was a junky looking show to start with, it was about kids being the shitty kids that they are.
Simpsons was about the modern nuclear family of the late 80s and early 90s.
Family Guy was just another sitcom family show, the only thing that made it a hit was the comedic timing and Seth’s great voice acting along with a handful of funny/clever jokes. It feels like it’s a show that might as well be a weekly comic strip.
I like early season Family Guy, it was funny at times. It really leaned into the Boston/Rhode Island type of personality and humor, which I think exists in everyone. But the characters are awful and nothing matters in the show yet they try to do drama. You care about the Simpsons, you are shocked about Kyle getting AIDS from Cartman, but literally anything can happen in Family Guy and it doesn’t matter.
So, yes, they get shit on for using cutaway gags instead of story/character.
