The show runner took the mantra of 'make things you are interested in' and really ran with it, downplaying the risk of it not actually being entertaining to other people. Its just sort of a gentle show to have on in the background. I can't really figure out who it is for. For as nice as it looks the overall presentation is still really kiddish so I don't think adults would like it too much but I think little kids would be super interested in learning about obscure Los Angeles history or gentrification. It is the sort of thing I can see parents liking for their kids to watch because it isn't annoying to have in the background and won't make their kids act crazy or talk all weirdly trying to imitate the characters and it might encourage the kids to try to talk to their grandparents more.
I like the director's work, broadly, but I think she needs to be paired up with someone else or needs to be made to work on other people's ideas. Her own ideas are just sort of bland, but she's well suited to different kinds of kids edutainment. If there was more of a market for adult slice of life or 'iyashikei' ('healing') content she could do well there too. There's a 2000s mumblecore gloss to her directorial style.
