Clay's problems were always emotional insecurity caused by his terrible relationship with his father. He wanted to be acknowledged more than anything. Bloberetta's problems were emotional immaturity caused by her abusive home life and desired to make a "family" because it means she'd be the one in charge like her mother was. Stop Frame's problem was being gay in a heavily religious and conservative environment which sent him spiraling into nihilism and being unwilling to try and create a real relationship.
The 3rd season of Orel demonstrates how each of them could have been happy with Orel, Joe, and Stephanie. Orel escapes the need of external validation and is able to live his life not clinging to anyone, Joe chooses to leave the negligent he was raised in and pursued a familial relationship with someone who wanted to reciprocate rather than forcing someone to be his new family, and Stephanie realized that chasing after someone who doesn't really love you will only be self destructive for her and to pursue healthy relationships and love.
[Also to be clear just in case anyone doesn't get it, Clay doesn't actually love Stop Frame, he loved the attention Stop frame gave him and manipulated Stop Frame just as much as Stop Frame manipulated him, it's just Stop Frame decided to put and end to ti]
