All they had to do was make a competent movie that was better than Spider-Man 3 of course there was still going to be haters but after a movie or two they would accept and like the new Spider-Man if he was good. Instead of deciding to make a better movie that Spider-Man 3 they decided to go ahead with Spider-Man 1 attempting to remake it but doing literally every aspect worse.
Homecoming is a great example of working with the fact your movie is in Raimi's shadow and using those movies in clever ways (while also making jokes about TASM along the way)
