A few gems (the "crystal" gems that the show follows) take pity on the citizens of earth and betray their leader, lunging them into a civil war. They keep the earth safe from monsters and gems from their homeworld.
Though the leader of the crystal gems, Rose Quartz, is a huge pussy with questionable ethics; she has the crystal gems essentially go into hiding, leading to a bunch of unintended consequences. including the war never really being over.
Now that I think about it it's kinda hard to summarize the plot, it's kind of all over the place.
