Drastically cutting production costs does two major things:
1 - it massively increases profits in the short term
2 - it massively reduces subscriber forecasts leading to less revenue over time
Netflix is just deciding that short-term profit pumping is a more beneficial strategy than trying to maintain dominance in the market.
