Optimus wasn't too coddled by his archivist life in the rich cities to actually go against the autobot high council in a significant way. Megatron tried pleading with them but they just shot him down and so he decided to do a French Revolution.

It all depends on the continuity.
Though, even at their most "evil" such as G1, I've always liked that Transformers is rooted in war but also shows both sides perspectives, it shows that the Cons and Bots both have reasons for what they do, they're just opposite sides of a coin

His motivations degraded more and more until he wanted to build his own dictatorship of elites ruling everyone else.

He even tried to join Unicron to be the Antichrist who wants to erase all life but he was viewed as a slave at best and undeserving of existing at worst.

Thus after being enslaved in both body and soul Megatron realized how miserable his existence was and became a NEET secluded from everyone else.

That was the origin in idw and Cyberverse. In Transformers: Prime Megatron started the war because he was butthurt he wasn't chosen to be the next prime and Orion Pax was instead.

It's why he's got such a god complex in Prime it's his entire motivation.

"But the Decepticons are actually good cuz they wanna save their race!" Is one of the most mid takes on the franchise and I hate how much it caught on after the Bay movies. Especially when its something like "Optimus is bad for letting his race die!" When the option to save their race involves exterminating another one. We laughed at Raksha in the 90's, now every other fan spews this take out because they want the franchise to sound deeper than it actually is.

A lot of the push for this began with a poster on the Something Awful forums, who was literally a mental patient who had to keep checking herself into mental hospitals. Literal crazy people think the Autobots are the bad guys and Decepticons good.

That's the problem of working backwards from the simplistic original base plot meant for children's minds to grasp.

Megatron was originally evil for the sake of being evil, nothing else to it. Beast Wars Megatron had the same approach and was clearly shown to enjoy being a bastard. At some point someone tried to make the name of Megatron more nuanced and it just ended up getting horribly out of hand. At the same time these same people felt it was necessary to make Optimus more "flawed" and then they became laser focused on making him the universe's whipping boy and ensuring he was constantly suffering, which also got way out of hand.

These people usually have half-shaven heads, more piercings than pimples in their faces and have bloody diarrhea at the idea of heterosexual love in Cybertronian society.

Reminder that it's canon, through both direct evidence and specific official statement, that Aligned's novels, High Moon games, and tv series are three separate universes. The initial intent may have been a single continuity, but it was doomed from the start.

Yeah, I was around for Raksha in the 90's. And IDW has a more grey set up overall. But the push to subvert things was never as prominent int he fandom until after the movies. Like I said, raksha's stuff was a joke back then.

The IDW comic's already been rebooted and the reboot's about to end too.
