Totally. My kids were asking some hard questions at storytime every night. Children process complex concepts pretty clearly because they aren't bogged down by years systemic programming yet.

Absolutely. In fact, they'll seek out darker themes in media sometimes. I don't have remember any /co/ examples but there's an entire vidya community dedicated to writing war stories for an online children's game that just briefly mentioned war. You have no idea how many stories there are on the Wildworks Writing Wiki about technicolor animals losing their family and becoming a war criminal.

its not so much understanding immediately after reading that is important
its when it eventually clicks together that is important. it may be soon after reading, or when someone explains it to them, or even years after that their brains have developed but that "ah ha!" moment really sticks with them

It all depends on age, maturity, and personality. Before the sixth grade, I didn't really love anything outside of aesthetics. I think different stories speak to different people.
