And the fact he even has friends; has infinite power makes him increasingly disconnected from everyone else (like the vampire effect) and the only thing that gave him joy was fighting villains but even that became hollow.
If not for blonde cyborg reminding him of his own humanity, and his own aspirations, and so on, he would have become a villain. He even more or less spells it out in the first (second? whatever) episode where he says to the giant roid guy how having all that power feels like shit.

Not the guy you're talking to, but what I personally don't like about Superman is that he's fucking stupid (but it's passed off as smart) and relies on his powers to solve everything.
Sometimes he jobs and people get hurt (to raise the stakes) but it's never because of some cleverness on the part of the villain to exploit the rules or limitations of his powers, nor is it say the result of some personal shortcoming of superman or flaw, it's just sometimes he's a jobber.
Sometimes he seems to just forget his powers, sometimes he's just not permitted by the story to use his powers at that moment (and not in a "I can't control my eye lasers, so every civilian needs to be out of the way or even firing them NEAR people will turn the air into plasma and kill them" way like Black Canary) until he is.

There are other characters that have that problem; pretty much every character that uses magic (Zatanna, Constantine, Doctor Fate, etc) but usually not nearly as badly (usually because there's at least SOME sort of rule, or handicap, or cleverness by the villain, like I mentioned).

I didn't say he's not allowed to be a hero, I said he's not allowed to one-shot every villain instantly or solve every single problem in an instant despite always having the power to do so.

And I didn't give Thor a pass, I said characters like Thor are only slightly less bad but still bad. Superman just stands out amongst the Thors because Thor has some limitations, a tiny bit of character, with a microscopic amount of flaws and sometimes does a tiny bit of growing.

Luckily Nolan actually has way more depth to his character and is just a soldier in a much more powerful army capable of easily killing him if he disobeys orders, he legitimately lacked the moral frame of reference to understand what he was doing was wrong until he acclimated to Earthlings

No it's not, just make a movie about cadmus and have the government portrayed as the villains they are in the real world. Most of the writing does itself, all kinds of evil shit the government has really done to people could be written into a superman story. It's not an unrealistic take on someone who grew up with the powers of superman in similar circumstances though. Imagine being Clark Kent able to hear every crime, murder or rape happening in a thousand km. Every time you try to relax or spend time with your friends you can hear someone out there ,if you care to listen, begging for help and you have to chose not to save them to have some time to yourself. All the villains in the show are humans whose interests or aspirations became an obsession and that obsession became twisted.
Saitama wanted to be a great hero, but then that became an obsession with being the strongest hero, his detachment from humanity was growing and he was on the path towards what the show would call a "villain", i.e. a person that uses their power to do whatever they want for their own gratification and may or may not hurt people in the process.

It's not explicitly stated as such, but per the rules of the show as they're shown to us, I think it's a reasonable conclusion to the question of "What would have happened if Saitama's life hadn't been changed by Genos?"

That's not what that means. "The exception that proves the rule" is short for "The exception that proves the rule existed in the first place"

It's like if there was a club entirely of men, with no written rule that women aren't allowed, but they hesitate to let a woman join the club because there's an unspoken, implied rule. Letting a woman join would be just as easy and accepted as a man if it weren't for that unspoken rule, feeling that they need to make an exception for her, makes that the exception that proves the rule existed.

Yes exactly he was raised in a different era with a different set of values and simply cannot find his place in the present. The story subtlety tells us that he is and everything he represents is incompatible with the modern era and he passes down his shield to a new generation who can be better than him.

Superman is literally a WASP. He was raised by a stereotypical white family in a stereotypical American town. He is the literal embodiment of the American Dream: white, christian, male, strong ethics, honest, hard working, has a good job etc... Why is it so hard to except that he is the personification of America? Literally his main plot point is him trying to live up to the upstanding American morals that his father taught him. You know truth, justice and the American Way. If he landed in Ukraine and were raised by Ukrainians parents he would be playing soccer and killing Russians, Jews and Poles in a righteous vengeance in the name of Ukraine. Then he would create Great Ukraine which would probably be a semi-feudal state with no freedom of speech and high taxes.

Working for the government is different than being the living avatar of your nation's precieved morals. Also this is true for most of the justice league and this is why DCU movies flop, because non Americans can't really identify with them. Whereas every girl can identify with a sexy woman with a troubled past and every guy can identify with flawed genius or a narcissistic surgeon.

He found it again by living vicariously through Genos.
Saitama's growth: At first he's competing with Genos and feeding his own ego by accepting Genos' praise. Then later Saitama, in a truly selfless act, deliberately tanks his reputation and earns the ire of the public when previously his motivation (while competing with Genos) was fame.

What growth does stuperman do? He grows during his origin story then stays the same forever.

It was garbage, just like all of superman's comics. Thankfully the japanese were able to take the crude, clumsy, poorly thought out character that is Superman and tell a much much better story.
