Was he a good dad or a shit dad? Sure he loved his son, but that's pretty much all he did. I'm not counting him raising, clothing and feeding him as bonus points for being a good dad since that's literally the bare minimum (or you go to jail) and he still only did that until about 7.

After 7 raising a child gets easier. Babies/toddlers are super prone to getting themselves killed without someone watching them 24hrs. So he already did the heavy lifting.

Also Steven isn't a normal kid but I wish I could see what it would be like if he went to a normal school.

The show tried to subvert expectations of what the role of the father figure is so instead of having Greg provide material support he instead provides emotional support while Steven's two moms and sister play the more traditional familial roles.

Remember that time Greg abandoned Steven to deal with Rose clones despite basically calling out for his help, cus I remember. Even the other gems who knew her for way longer tried to stick by Steven. That always stuck out to me.

Oh, yes. Steven has an "episode" where he gets pissed at Greg for not taking him to school/doctor/raising him normally and starts going off on him while they're driving, resulting in Steven getting so worked up he rips out the steering wheel and crashes the van.

Mr Universe unironically was a great episode. Greg is a realistically flawed character there was a lot building up for a while, for example his complete lack of interesting in reconnecting with his family, that needed to be addressed

Greg was a good dad and Steven was being a typical teenage shit when he realized his dad was an actual person with flaws. Greg always supported his son on everything he wanted to do, gave him good advice, told him to be himself and that he was proud of him, never scolded him for expressing himself in various ways. Steven didn't have any desire to go to school or be "normal" as a kid, and if he hadn't spent his time training with the gems he wouldn't have been able to do protect earth from Homeworld later.

Sure, Greg wasn't perfect and there are times where he bails on Steven see>>115207666 but no one is perfect and Greg being unsure around magic gem shit is understandable. Steven would have been miserable with strict parents like Greg's-
