If you read the text-only sections, then the author starts going crazy after 175 (Reads). If you skip the text-only sections (except for Jaka's Story, where the prose is actually good) and you only read the actual COMIC parts of the comic, then the comic won't become upsetting until around 232 (Going Home) and it won't become unbearable until around 282 (Chasing YHWH).

It's recommended to read until 200, which has a satisfying conclusion, and then take a break before deciding whether or not you want to continue to 300.

A lot of people have differing opinions on that, but really the only parts of Cerebus you shouldn't read are the text passages in Reads and pretty much the entirety of Latter Days (The Last Day is a high note at the end of the series)

If it has a decent plot, it's buried fucking deep. I was right in the middle of what everyone calls one of the best arcs, and the comic still hadn't made me give a fuck about the setting or the characters.

I could honestly write a book on how good Cerebus is, but what impresses me the most is that it was one guy who had a singular vision for a 300 issue epic, and he did it all more or less on his own (with the help of gerhard of course), and at a level of quality that far surpassed pretty much anything the big two put out at the time, or even since.

Every single one of these gets reused later on. Even when Dave Sim was an unfunny hack, he still knew what he was doing.

I think they have them all on instocktrades, including the remastered editions that have come out recently. As far as chronology goes you start at the beginning and read to the end.

The first five volumes are by far the best too.
If you really want to, start by buying the second volume, and seeing if you like it. Many consider is the best part of the series, and it can even be read as a standalone comic if you really want it to.

I tried reading this. I endured a lot of it for completion's sake. But at the Last Days of Cerebus I just fukken lost it!
He finally got together with his oldtimey sweetheart (who is a horrible person) and she goes and does that one dumb thing just to push his buttons and he justly BTFO's her. Now I'm not gonna read about a dozen or so books about a sad old aardvark dying forgotten and alone. That was my line.

Please give us your definition of a graphic novel. Do you think Watchmen is a graphic novel? Jesus. Even outside of misusing that term i just hate it in general. I was talking also about the individual storylines. Do they even work on their own? Like High Society was 99% of Cerebus trying to get elected and the 1% was him not being able to govern and then it moves on to the next story. Like okay.

I don't understand what you're asking. Cerebus becomes pope during Church and State, loses his power, then he becomes a religious leader again during Latter Days and remains the head of his religion until his death. None of that would've been possible if he hadn't become prime minister during High Society.

i was trying to keep it away from newspaper comics. As for Watchmen I don't see why it wouldn't be a graphic novel (a comic that goes on for pages, as opposed to newspaper comics). Is it because it's split into volumes?

A graphic novel is something that's published as a single piece, i.e. something like The Killing Joke or The Death of Captain Marvel. Watchmen was a 12-issue limited series, Cerebus was a 300-issue ongoing series.

Manga has a different pace, though, Sim probably thought of 300 chapters like a grandiouse frontier for his personal expression while Kishimoto just made it to get paid. It's an indie comic vs mainstream comic kinda difference.

It's interesting if nothing else. People hold it up on a pedestal but a lot of it isn't very good and exists mostly to fill space so it can hit 300 issues. The first 150 issues are very strong comic books, however.
