Stan Sakai is a cool dude. Yes, he was born in Japan, but people move. He's an American citizen an grew up in America.
He got started in comics doing lettering for Groo the Wanderer by Sergio Aragones, whom he's good friends with. From there he did animal comics. At the time they were big, funny critter creatures. Usagi Yojimbo is his big hit. He's been doing it for years. He's done consistently good work with the art and writing. He learns about Japanese culture and customs, then presents it in the comic.
Having met him at a few cons, I can say he's just a chill dude and really approachable. He's one of those creatures that doesn't cause shit, or upset anyone for publicity. He just seems to do it because he likes who he works with and what he's writing. Had some fun chats about stuff before Dark Horse and got signed con-only stuff.
