I'm starting to doubt if people understand there is a difference between mature media and media that contains mature themes.
Anime is usually not mature media and as such, is not targeted for adults. It is media with mature themes that handle them in childish manners that appeal to young teenagers. You are in fact no better watching anime over cartoons as you're regressing to your early stages of adolescence.
Cartoons that aren't "educational" or aimed at children under the age of 5 usually have themes or undertones that only adults truly get. Anime does not have these and so it is not trying to appeal to both kids and adults. It's appealing to shitty 13-year-old kids that looked up "boobies" in computer class. Cartoons can and do appeal to adults because they're secondarily made for them so it is okay to watch cartoons as an adult. You should be embarrassed to still be watching childish anime shows (stuff like Your Name, Spirited Away, shows/movies that have actual mature themes are fine) past the age of 15.
