Hell, if anything they were probably better off when they started. Ben was just a small kid with a problem with bullies and his head buried in cape comics. And Gwen was a wet blanket, know-it-all, AND teachers pet, which is a combination that wouldn't have made her many friends. At least over the Show, Ben learned (the hard way) to be less of a dickhead and became more capable, and Gwen lightened up and learned to take more initiative. Sure they would have to carry the Burden Max did for all his life of lying about what they saw, but still that doesn’t make them incapable of enjoying normal life
