And that's your big mistake. Because Sonic is a Japanese property.
The closest analogue to the Sonic Franchise isn't Felix the Cat or Mickey Mouse and it never was. It's Dragonball.
The Adventure games are a continuation of the same lore, settings, and concepts that Classic in the same way that DBZ is a continuation of Dragonball. The tone shifts from more adventure to action, but it's still the same cast and mechanics and the like.
