>>130245060Carol's solo book was cancelled, and it seemed to be a Marvel policy around the time to retire or even kill a lot of characters if their book failed. Nova and Ghost Rider both lost their powers when their books ended, Spider-Woman's book ended with her dying. Exceptions would happen if there were writers who wanted to work the character onto a team book, but in Carol's case Avengers #200 was meant to retire her.
Claremont got to write a damage control story to address fans who'd interpreted #200 as a rape story, and he addressed it by making them right, but he still ultimately had to find another way to retire Carol, so he had her go off into space with the Starjammers, and nobody at Marvel really cared about bringing her back until the late 90s. Whether having Rogue steal her powers and memories, or turning her into Binary was necessary or not is another matter.
