The fact that most people only cared about 2 characters as ACTUAL characters with pathos and motivation and believable relationships is just one of the reasons D:BH's story structure is actually pretty average from a technical standpoint.
Hank and Connor are popular is not because of writing strength, but because of acting strength. Kara and Alice forgiving Todd in the good ending - so the one with supposedly the strongest writing because it evokes a positive reaction which is difficult - is laughable when its not being offensive, and I'll just ignore the PATHETIC attempts at allegory when they aren't being addressed obviously - again, offensively - in the text. The text being the story in case you think to take that too literally.
