It works, as I don't need to store entire formulas in my brain but just their shapes, and then the details slowly come to me as I start writing it. The best example is, in my opinion, Stokes' Theorem.
I don't know about finance but if you have a lot of boring formulas written by uninspired hacks then odds are you do have to store the entire content in your brain, which would be a hassle.
