having an understanding of calculus, being a good writer, being articulate, being inventive, etc. any one of these is a sufficient condition for being "smart" imo.
but i think a necessary condition is plasticity. even if you're a slow learner, you have to be able to acquire new knowledge and integrate that into your internal model of the world. none of the above are possible if you're a dolt who needs everything spoonfed to you.
