The string theory of the 70s did pretty much nothing. After tons of work, a lot done by Witten, now it does nothing in much more complicated ways.

Susskind started it. But Ed Witten mastered it then became the best.

Physicists developed 5 different versions of String theory.

Using very advanced math, Ed Witten unified all these 5 versions into the M-theory.

Then In 1990, Witten became the first and so far the only physicist to be awarded a Fields Medal.

Not bad for a B.A in History & PhD in Physics.

He is now a Professor at Princeton Institute for Advanced Study.
