That would result in a literate population that could understand a lot of the more complex mathematical concepts that most Americans would not otherwise care / know about.
However, from personal experience, someone who is great at the sciences has both the knowledge of their specific field and also the drive to push boundaries.
It does matter what you know, but what is even more important is what you do with that knowledge.
