If dams are somewhat bad for the environment, because they disrupt ecosystems, why don't we build artificial waterways that divert a minor amount from drainage basins, in the same way that normal rivers do (catching rain, runoff from glaciers), and then dam those? A sterile concrete canal that was not previously in the terrain would be significantly less damaging, no?
