P versus NP would be my immediate guess.
If P=NP a lot of problems could be potentially solved much faster than they are now (Look up a list of NP-Complete problems).
If P!=NP I guess that means we can probably safely use NP-Complete problems for encryption.
Right now we mostly use prime factorization which isn't known to be NP-Complete.

This isn't necessarily true if a non-constructive proof of P=NP is found. So we may know if 3-SAT is in P, but not know what the algorithm is. Knuth thinks this is more likely.

I remember watching Wiles' Abel Prize interview on YouTube once. The top comment was of a crank saying that because Wiles used analytic method his stuff was absurd and invalid, and only an elementary proof could be valid.
Nothing can stop cranks. People still discover simple "proofs" of the four colours theorem every other day
