Agreed 100%. Something doesn't add up here. Wrapping up PhD in similar field (biophysics/structural biology) with comparable publication record, 5 total, 1 first author, 2 second/third authors, 2 nth authors in respectable journals. Not Cell/Nature/Science but all "bread-and-butter", solid journals for the field (impact factors ~5 - 9). Sent out 4 post-doc applications, got 3 interviews, ultimately had 3 offers.

Getting a postdoc isn't hard. But it is not a long term option in most countries. In Germany, where I am living again, you are only allowed to work as a postdoc for a certain amount of time.

Yucky. I'm the biochem undergrad in the other thread who embarrassed myself. Honestly, this is why I'm investing all my student loans so that I can retire when I finish school if I don't end up with a career at the end of my schooling.

Dude, >>10898436 here. Postdoc opportunities are a dime a dozen because they are essentially cheap labour. The question is: what comes afterwards? This is where the real selection begins. With your current publication record, you will likely not get any good position in academia.

How many of those positions are postdocs? Of the students I have seen graduate, only one person has made it in academia. And that person came out of his PhD with three well-received first author papers in Nature and Science (2x).

I would say it's about 60/40 industry/post docs, but most of the post docs are doing it for better industry positions down the line. I dont know of a single one who has succeeded in being an assistant professor yet, but I also don't think anyone seriously was going for that, to my knowledge.

With a PhD, pretty easy to get a job in a private high school. Know a few people who wanted to teach high school, so they went to rich private high schools because pay+benefits were better and they didn't have to get teaching credentials with the state (as far as I know). I don't know anyone who went the community college route, though I know it's done as an "adjunct" faculty (read: lecturer). From what I hear it's pretty easy, but pay is horrid and no benefits. You're basically making a meager wage for part-time lecturing. Usually done while holding out for another gig. In the sciences, not too common, most people would rather do a second- or third (gulp) post-doc for that tenure-track gig.

Getting any post-doc is not challenging. Plenty to go around. What's hard is getting a "high-profile" post-doc, in other words a well-known lab for a famous PI. Those are the post-docs that launch you to tenure-track or good jobs in the private sector. Much harder to come by. Need to have a few pubs in respectable journals + come from a well-connected PI and a good PhD program.

Same here. At a big-name flagship public school, everyone in biochemistry/biophysics/biology PhD has had something lined up. Mostly post-docs. Otherwise, off the top of my head, some industry scientist positions at mid-size biotechs or software engineering and data science, few consulting jobs, few policy fellowships in DC.

Can't argue with this. Sure, post-docs are a plenty and many PhD students do them when they probably shouldn't. I think the question for most people to ask themselves is why. If they do a post-doc because they think it's the "next thing to do" or because they can't get a job in industry or at McKinsey, that's going to be a problem and they'll be asking themselves the same thing in five years after having given up a better salary and put off starting their life.

On the other hand, I don't think that wanting to do a faculty job should be a prerequisite for wanting to do a post-doc. There are benefits to post-doc training prior to going into the private sector. You just have to be smart about it: go to a well-connected lab, in or near a biotech hub. Don't stay 6 or 7 years; do 2 - 3, 4 tops. Don't hold out for Nature/Cell/Science. Get your J Med Chem or maybe Nature Chemical Biology/JACS papers and move on.

Im my opinion, most freshly minted PhDs do them because they have no other choice. I only did a postdoc because it was that or being unemployed. Many of my co-workers also wanted to get out of academia.

This is not true. It's an illusion based on numbers. While most PIs have completed a postdoc in a high-profile lab, only few people from high profile labs become PIs. Many high profile labs employ 20-40 postdocs. Some of them indeed make it into PI positions. But most of them are forgotten. I know somebody who was postdoc-ing in Bob Weinbergs lab and had a shitty project. He received no support whatsoever.

Sure, no disagreement. But, regardless of how you come to the post-doc, the fact is you're there. So, if you want to get out of academia, get a job in biotech or consulting or policy, then I don't think you should approach the post-doc like you would if you were going for a faculty job.

Of the people I've come across who went to "high-profile" labs (and this is subjective, high-profile to me may not be high-profile to someone else), they all had a solid publication records and had good recs from established, well-connected PIs. But, not everyone wants to get them, or can get these post-docs. Many go other routes. So, I guess "hard" is subjective, too.

I think labs with armies of >20 post-docs tend to be with certain strains of famous PIs. Famous to scientists across disciplines? Yes, many of those PIs have >20 post-docs. Well-regarded within the discipline but maybe not as well-known outside? Tend to be smaller, maybe <20 lab members in total. Yes, this is a pretty broad generalization. "High-profile" is not objective, either.

I'd guess if you're doing a post-doc for someone like George Church then yes, it's probably easier to be forgotten.
I agree that many post-docs can be lost in the mix but, overall there are a handful of labs that supply an oversized chunk of new PIs. Your odds of getting a tenure-track job are never great, but they're better in one of the big-name faculty feeder labs at Harvard or Berkeley, than they are at podunk State U.
