But anon, what if my IQ is too low, and my genes thus bar me from most areas of study? Or I'm a poorfag and have to spend most of my waking hours wageslaving to put food on the table? The vast majority of the population is either too stupid or too poor to ever become mildly interesting.

Not really...?
Physics and chemistry are only a subset of the knowledge that’s out there, and physics only really takes advantage of a subset of mathematics out there. People should just make the effort to learn as much as possible but specialize in what they like the most. Nobody is “depriving” themselves of anything unless they aggressively avoid well reviewed work on some self aggrandizing ideas of superiority

and Thermochemistry, so a bit of study would provide a good background.
• even-longer answer : a deep background in any subject is advantageous, but the time, effort, and cost of obtaining it

More generally, $x$ people should study $y$ so long as they enjoy it. If they enjoy it there's a chance that it might benefit their investigation in $x$ , or at the very least improve them as a person. That's it. It's not complicated.
