Anyone have any experience with the "Dovers books on Math and Science"?

These are the three I'm considering grabbing, but I'm not sure they're worth the time.

I love most Dover math/physics books but I have the Mechanics one in the picture and it is pretty much useless and outdated engineering applications.

Your mileage may vary because they’re all by different authors, but I have the information theory and decision theory ones and I liked them. At the very least they help with conceptual understanding

The books on Differential Equations and Fourier Series are pretty good. For mechanics I'd recommend Statics and Dynamics by Russell C Hibbeler. They're for engineers but are still good.

Cheap, but often extremely dated (typically from the 1950s or earlier). Sometimes not very well printed either. I did come across a copy of Riehl’s very recent category theory book. Seems like they might start a new collection with recent books in the same price range.

There are lots of good dover books, some are getting dated but these are good

Pinter A Book of Abstract Algebra
Do Carmo Differential Geometry
Halmos Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces
Gelbaum and Olmsted Counter Examples in Analysis

Halmos was the first book I ever that actually explains precisely what a vector space is without assuming you already know what a vector space is.

(Yes I know it's simple to understand you faggots, but without concrete examples you often don't understand what kind of computations are really possible with the abstractions).

Yes and no. Of course for undergrad math/physics, the material has not changed, but there are notational/lexical differences. It’s not that big of a deal, but there are small things like vector spaces with scalar multiplication to the right that make a lot of sense (in some sense, it is the right notation if you apply maps to the left) but just look weird, and other things like that.

How is pic related for self study if I already know elementary differential equations?
The single math textbook my pajeet-tier EE program uses has less than 50 pages on differential equations and laplace transforms.

The book is just useless drivel. It quite literally begins with 6 pages of counting and using a number line. The section on calculus, starting with limits, begins on page 659.

I have the last two. Information theory is fucking awesome if you ever plan to work in data science.

But they're so cheap it doesn't hurt to get any of them. I like the dover probability book.

Really depends on the book. Some are real gems, like "Basic Abstract Algebra", by Ash, "Differential Geometry", by Kreyszig, or "Vector and Tensor Analysis", by Borisenko.

Physics books age faster and many are outdated, with some exceptions such as "The Variational Principles of Mechanics", by Lanczos.

You shouldn't judge a book based in it's level of material. It's your own fault for not reading the preface.

The book clearly caters to technologists returning from industry who now all of a sudden has to learn basic ODEs after several years of not doing even high school math. There is a massive need for such texts.

The thermo books are out of date, most of them are based on virial while most of practicle research and industry has moved to cubic equations that better describe EOS. The stat mech book is alright tho.

Well, technically you can derive cubic from virial EoS.

Modern textbooks should still teach virial because of how it can be directly linked to molecular potentials through stat. mech.

Ash is a great and comprehensive *introduction* (groups, rings, fields, modules, group structure, Galois theory, commutative algebra, and homological algebra). Jacobson's two volumes are for a deeper dive. If you don't want to specialise in algebra all you need beside Ash is representation theory and category theory, which are usually taught in separate courses and books anyway. And Ash has the solved exercises at the end.

You wut m8? Taylor only has a 56 page chapter 12 on that and most undergrad classes skip it.
