When I did my PhD we were told to spend one day of the week in the research library, keeping abreast of the latest development in our field.
There are companies that track nearly all publications, categorises and classify these and let you do a search string on publications. That is also a way to track what is hot. Services like that are also used in patenting, by Patent Offices as well as patent law firms and in house patent departments.
It is already a huge problem and it will grow, until we reach the knowledge event horizon.
