What's normalisation?

I gave an entrance exam for some university which was conducted in two shifts (with a different set of question papers). I was scoring 26 out of 40 in mathematics section but there was one ambiguous question so I was hoping that the university would just give grace marks to students for that question and I would end up getting up 30.
(All questions were MCQs and the marking scheme was +3 for correct answer and -1 for incorrect and my answer wasn't matching with the answer key provided)
But after the results were out I ended up scoring 24.63 in mathematics.
On the website it says our scores were normalized because of that particular question.
Is something like this even possible or did they perhaps make a mistake?
