In my country, most people get a Master's before going for a Ph.D

It seems that most people go straight to the Ph.D in the US, why is that? I think it makes sense, but I'm wondering why some places put so much emphasis on the master's degree.

It really depends on the school and the program. There is a ton of variety in the US.

The structure in America is different.
An American PhD (in most subjects, like math) is like a foreign Master's+PhD glued together. American PhDs are longer (for example the standard length of an American math PhD is 5-6 years, whereas it's only 3-4 in most countries), and the first 1-2 years roughly corresponds to a Master's while the rest corresponds to a PhD.

In my country getting a PhD or masters is the same process of post grad research, masters is 1-2 years of it, PhD is 3-4.

PhDs in the states tend to run longer. It's also discipline specific - lots of folks in more industry-oriented disciplines will just go for a Master's at first since it makes the most economic sense.

So the students get dragged into a deep debt hole with no midway exit. You'll either be a poorly employable Bachelor, or you suck it up for a few years and hundreds of thousands in student debt and be a PhD.
