I knew an /x/phile namefag IRL. He was always a bit off in a way that's not unusual among engineering students, but really went off the deep end when he became schizo after massive amounts of delirant abuse and weed smoking one year. It got to the point where he was screaming about the CIA and freaking people out with his school shooting obsessions and even scared one professor enough that the cops were called. He walked off a building last summer.
He wasn't dumb but he was eager to believe any conspiracy he read online and completely fried his brain with drugs. It didn't help that /x/ egged his delusions on at every step of the way.

Nothing is wrong with them other than getting bad programming. Their behavior is similar to primitive tribes, where there is no stigma from having visions etc. Normal people have visions all the time, but they're encouraged not to act on them, and in our industrialized world those sort of visions do not help you survive, bit if we were in a small tribe, the schizo in the corner babbling to himself would be highly valued for his spiritual connection and would likely be a Wiseman or witch doctor. The /x/philes are just the whimsical remnants of our Hunter gatherer past.

This. placebo effect works really well depending on the case, and since most of them seems to be related to things like depression, it could work.
