If you are self studying, how are you suppose to check your proofs? Couldn’t you easily fool yourself into thinking your proofs are correct?

isn't is obvious whether or not the argument you make is correct?
these aren't 30 page papers.

What is the point of homeworks or exams? Give every math student a set of books to read. Don’t have lectures, don’t answer any questions, don’t confirm any answers and the end of the 4-years give them a math degree. That’s what self-studying is like when you don’t get a single question checked outside of yourself for correctness

Going a lot of times through the proofs of the book, such as memorizing them, makes it easier to juggle them in your working memory. Most of the times you have also to fill the gaps and you have exercises to do. You get good with time. Don't overthinking it.

The point is to get good enough to critically evaluate your own work to determine if it constitutes a proof.

Assume it's correct and try applying it to bigger problems, knowing that you may have made a mistake. Compare your broader conclusions to those derived by others.
And, of course, revisit your proofs after you've read a little further.
