Taking a gap year is an all-around benefit, I think, as long as you spend it doing research professionally and not fucking around. Doing full-time science is a very different beast than doing undergrad research while dealing with classes and all the other college bullshit. If you can learn how to be a full-time scientist and really leverage a work week before even setting foot in grad school, you're going to have a good head start.

Going back to grad school after working will be very hard. You will be used to making money and getting into grad school straight out of undergrad will probably easier because you will have more connections right now to write you letters of recommendations and whatnot. Also, there probably isnt too good of a chance you will get a job doing what you really want to do if you start working right away, if you could then why are you even considering grad school?

The biggest reason I'm thinking about waiting is my fall and spring grades arn't included in admissions if I go right away so they only see my shitty years so I wont go to my desired school.

With the job market the way it is, work experience trumps school. They will take bachelor's + work experience over grad school with nothing any day.

The thinking man's decision is to work at a company that will pay for your grad school after working for them for 1 to 2 years. Also if the economy tanks, grad school is always an option while entry level positions get hit the hardest

working before grad school is extremely important. it will improve your work ethic, and give you a real taste of how dull and mundane the rat race is so you better get very good while in grad school.

also people that go straight through tend to be immature, narrowminded, and easily controlled. they will slave away forever for free for the occasional “wow youre so smart” points.

My cousin got 3 masters degrees at 23. CS, computer engineering, robotics iirc.
Meanwhile I went to community college and have a useless general transfer A.S. and haven't been back to school since 22 due to health and money, and not being a go-getter.
Now I'm almost 28, working in a pretty rarefied arts job that pays poorly despite being quasi-prestigious. Her salary is >100k.
I feel like I missed the boat. I really envy her and her parents.
Dunno how to keep coping.
