I have not heard it being bad by anyone except few saying that he is intimidating (like, he will say "proof is left as an exercise to the reader" even though it's a highschool book when students need learning the most).
It's great for self study. I suspect that math teacher in highschool dislikes it because it has lots of text, that teacher most likely prefers a book like James Stewart's Calculus that explains very little and is full of exercises, which is perfect for a teacher because they can explain it their way instead of author's method.
