They have won the CASP13 protein folding competition.

It makes sense that machine learning approaches would work really well for molecular mechanics since it's all just parametrization and choosing between a few annealing algorithms. Good for them I guess

I'll tell you guys- if you can control and predict the shape of proteins, you can start enginnering them for specific tasks. i'd like to create a constitutively active protein without its substrate but as of now would need to crystallize it and do em and a bunch of other shit so not gna happen. if this was fully fleshed out then i could simply make a new protein in silica that could do what i wanted, and then i can start catalyzing reactions that would do crazy things like

reversing prion aggregates
removing cholesterol from arteries
ligating death receptors on cancer cells
etc etc

yep, as well as predicting already existing proteins response to manipulation

being great at predicting protein folding is at least on the same level of utility as fast, cheap and reliable full genome sequencing, this is amazing tech if it works well
