Organs in cathedrals have a huge number of registers (40+) to produce a large variation of sounds. A register normally corresponds to a rank of pipes.
With little registers they use electro-pneumatic action, meaning there are electromechanical controlled valves placed in every pipe that regulate the air flow, so you can generate more registers than the number of actual ranks of pipes would allow. It also allows you to separate the console from the rest of the organ, hiding all the pipes.
