Publicly-owned enterprises have the benefit of ensuring equitable distribution of goods, while private-owned enterprises are more easily able to adapt to changes in consumer demand or supply (meaning shortages and waste are less likely to occur).
These are better for certain things rather than others. Food and healthcare are the sorts of things where a slight bit of inefficiency (compared to the market) is acceptable when it means that people aren't bankrupted by receiving care.
But on the other hand, it's less important to ensure everyone has an iPhone than it is to let the market drive down the price naturally and compete for the best quality. Society is not profoundly damaged by everyone not having access to an iPhone X.
