It's not a meme, it just means that you should try to find people that are compatible with your personality instead of trying to fit in with people that are not.
That works in general cases. That is, it works for normies and people who are somewhat close to being a normie. If you're an extreme case of an asshole or a weirdo you won't fit anywhere, or you will only fit with people that are exactly like you. That's the point where you should consider trying to change your behavior if you want to be social.
There's a difference between the general case and the extreme case. In the general case, "be yourself" means "don't try to change your personality when there's nothing wrong with it". In the extreme case, there actually is something wrong with your personality that's stopping you from being able to socialize.
