Look to the east, where people still venerate icons as divine, and you'll see why their art is ahead of the aniconist west. Deep down every jew knows he can't approach divinity so he attacks and slanders the idea; Christians, Buddhists, hell, most Pagans, can't help but try, and the resulting art speaks for itself.
