The more edgy the girl, the more obscure the popular niche, but it's all a signal that she is a member of the crowd and likes what's popular.
I am an illustration graduate and there were literally 20 girls out of 50 churning out this exact style, with almost identical subject matter. And no, this wasn't Korea or China, this was a relatively diverse university with students from many locales.
Girls move in herds. They are born into it, their survival depends on social acceptance. To say this doesn't affect their tastes is naive. Guys are more autistic, independent and inward thinking and don't have as many clear role models or trends to follow, so their taste is more personal and eclectic
