I am having a shitfuck time because I can't puzzle out this exact technique.

I'm trying to paint the same neck fur seen here, and blend. Is this the smudge tool being used? Or a custom brush? I'm hoping someone can advise me what to properly do, I really like the effect the artist got and I want to learn how to do it myself.

If you're willing to try a looser, more abstract approach to fur, you may find special brushes unnecessary.

no custom brush needed whatsoever, i dont understand what all these anons are talking about.

The major shapes have hard edges to them that are prob done with a hard brush in combination with the lasso tool. Then to make it more "painterly" and round the form a bit, a brush with low opacity and flow is used to go over these hard shapes and add some variation to the edges, color.

But anon even if you know the method, it takes skill and good toolhandling to apply it. Dont be upset if it doesn't work out and keep practicing. in the future youll look back and laugh that you couldnt do this.

It’s using two brushes, a brush like the watercolour brush from SAI with low blending and the same one but with the brush shape changed to a bristle tip

ah, I know of this technique, it is an ancient one
I know not of the tools used but the technique I recognize
it is called "skill"
Very good technique, you can acquire it with something called "studying" and also "practice"

It seems you have never seen someone paint fue before, efficiently and with a realistic look, and this is just an example, most profesional artist that paint fue use this very dame technique, you can get crisp locks of fur with the direct painterly technique.
