The book doesn't cost too much, I think it's worth it.
But the exercises basically are variations of the ones I posted (There are anatomy plates, bargue plates, values swatches, etc.), so you can make new ones on your own, you don't need the book if you don't want to read the history of this method and some other stuff.
Regarding the method:
You force yourself to measure everything. Doing 15-20 min. a day I noticed that after I could guess proportions easily.
