Is self taught art a meme? There are no good self taught artists.

Too bad I'm not really interested in art as a my job rather than just a fun skill to learn. I guess I'll never get good. It was a good run.

Anons point is insane, but what he's getting at is self taught artist is an unorganized thing while school gives you structure because school is more likely to be better than self taught.

school literally tells you how to do X then you show you can do a deviations of X. the only time this doesn't happen is in big-boy stem subjects. if you think copying some methods without understanding them will make you an artist, well, belief is as strong a drug as any.

Van Gogh had art education when he was young, and when he studied under Reolofs, he was convinced to study at Beaux-Arts, a prestigious art academy. He later studied under his cousin, who taught him watercolor and oils, and then later enrolled at the Academy in Brussels. I believe he also worked in an atelier later on, for a brief period.
He never finished a degree, and got in trouble at the schools and studios he studied in, but he was NOT self taught.

Well, this doesn't really prove much since OP specified good self-taught artists. Of course, another thing is that when you make it, and become a professional, nothing stops you form attending workshops, taking courses and such, so you're not compeletely self taught anymore, and most good artists probably do that, even if they were self taught in the beginning.

That's why you should only take hidden recordings of those classes and workshops and watch them on your laptop, that way you don't have to be deprived of your precious self-taught badge. No young artist will be inspired by your self improvement if they know that all this time you actually attended a life drawing class at a community college at some point, that's too high on the ivory tower for them.
