It's kind of like soul music, you can't force it, it just depends on your mentality or approach to the piece.
Conscious or Subconscious thoughts about 'making it' or 'making money' out of this kind of art affects the look of the piece, and that's why it's sort of something you do as a kid or privately as a hobby.
It's also really hard to plan out these sorts of procedural pieces too and planning them out actually takes more thought and is longer than making the piece itself, usually you need like, popular intellectual property to 'fill the image with variety and stuff' because the different characters and objects already had a huge amount of thought and detail put into them, and it's perceivable in the finished product.
I recommend studying old websites, music/game/movie/magazine covers (and ads in them) for inspiration, and stuff that wasn't made in the past 8-10 years.
